Metal bending is one of the most controversial phenomena. While some dismiss it as mere fraud, others are made to believe it. They have to trust their eyes.
However, Uri Geller Is not the only person practicing this unusual art.
Many such bizarre cases have been reported. After all who are these
people? How do they do it? These are some of the questions which defy
all rational explanation.
It was November 23, 1973. The people were watching television. There appeared a young man on the screen. He closed his eyes and duplicated a drawing that had been made just before the programme and sealed it in an envelope. Then he bent a fork by gently stroking it. And a fork which was kept on the table began to bend of its own. And by the time the programme ended, studio telephones started ringing. Viewers were also complaining that their forks and spoons had begun to bend.
The man who created such a sensation was none other than Uri Geller. The simple audience believed in Geller’s extraordinary power, but sceptics did not. They suspected that he was a big fraud. The editor of the Sunday Times travelled with Geller in a taxi to the airport and asked him to experiment with his own front door key. Geller was not surprised at the proposal. He started stroking the key. And the key bent like a hot ware candle. The editor realised his mistake.
Uri Geller became a sensation overnight. He gained popularity like a pop star. He was respected everywhere. Even in the US., where he was mocked at earlier, he was respected.
Despite the sudden overflow of love and adulation, Geller was not left to himself. He became an interesting subject for scientists to experiment with. A die was placed in a closed box and shaken. Geller was then asked to tell which side was on the top. He guessed it right. But he continuously failed in the test of target drawings. In fact, he could never select the right drawings without the presence of the artist who had made them. This fact led the researchers to conclude that telepathy was an important medium for Geller. However, some more scientific tests followed and Geller proved his genius and the world acknowledged his unique gift.
Besides Uri Geller there emerged several other metal benders like 17 years old Nicholas William, Girard and Belinda H. In fact Belinda was only six years old when she displayed her unique quality. Belinda was quite different. She was more interested in the process of healing than in displaying her unbelievable qualities. At home she nearly cured her grandmother when she was only a child of three years. On various occasions she relieved her parents of pain. Her method of treatment was simple. She merely used to keep her hand on the affected part of the body of the patient and after a few anxious moments, the pain used to disappear.
The patients used to feel as if they had never been a patient. The cure was miraculous.
No doubt, with its unique mysterious quality, the phenomenon attracted a lot of attention. With the worldwide publicity, the psychiatrists took notice of the incidents with all seriousness. Extensive research was conducted. Dr Robert Cantor, the well known psychiatrist, concluded that youngsters who were gifted with such a quality, suffered from other paranormal abilitie. He said that many of these youngsters have reported about the tiny lights moving around them and of high pitched whistles, while some have complained of headaches. particularly while making an effort to bend the metal. And, above all, Cantor said that the children whom he interviewed were frightened that if their power is misused, they will lose it for ever. Hence most of the children were eager to use their exceptional powers for good ends only.
These specially gifted people. Uri Geller, Nicholas William, Girard and Belinda, all require in depth study and cannot merely be dismissed as 'tricksters' or ‘frauds’. They are the exceptions, the genius and the
